Contesting priorities
I think I might be a contest junkie.
I recently entered Google’s CodeJam, a computer programming contest. I believe that I would have done much better given different timing. I was not happy with the fact that I had to “perform” within a specific 24 hour window. I was so sleep deprived when I sat down to program that I fell asleep at the keyboard at least three times during he allotted hour.
I obviously hadn’t learned my lesson and I signed up for a similar programming contest locally. Fortunately I figured out before this one began that I didn’t have the time to spare.
And since I appear to be a complete masochist I attempted to enter two business plan contests over the last week. Fortunately I found out about them the day after the registration deadline.
The moral of the story is to be aware of your priorities. When great opportunities come your direction you can be realistic about whether each opportunity supports your goals and where they fit in your priorities. I know there will be times where the fun of entering a contest or two will be high on my priority list. Until then I can keep
busy — I have more than enough priority tasks.
